Santa Maria Novella: where painted space learned depth

Most visitors see this church from the station named after it and walk on. Inside is the fresco where Renaissance perspective begins, and one of the most beautiful facades in Italy.

The Trinity: a hole in the wall

On the left aisle, Masaccio’s Trinity (c. 1427) looks at first like an architectural niche, and that is the revolution. Using Brunelleschi’s new mathematical perspective, Masaccio painted a coffered vault that seems to punch through the wall, with God, Christ, the donors and, below, a skeleton with the bluntest caption in art: “I was once what you are, and what I am you also will be.” Painted space with measurable depth begins here. Everything from Raphael’s rooms to the illusionist Baroque follows.

Alberti, Giotto, Ghirlandaio

The church rewards a slow loop. The green-and-white facade got its upper half from Leon Battista Alberti (from 1456), who grafted Renaissance geometry onto a Gothic base so gracefully the seam disappears. The volutes he invented to bridge nave and aisles became a European standard. Inside hang Giotto’s early Crucifix and Brunelleschi’s carved one. Behind the altar, Ghirlandaio’s fresco cycle is a portrait album of 1480s Florence, and Filippino Lippi’s Strozzi Chapel goes gorgeously strange. The Chiostro Verde keeps Paolo Uccello’s storm-green Flood, and the Spanish Chapel’s frescoed vault maps the Dominican world-view wall to wall.

Practical

The combined ticket covers church and cloisters. Queues are a fraction of the Duomo’s. It fits naturally at the start or end of a Florence day, the station is across the square. Complete the theme with the Medici Chapels ten minutes away, and the Officina di Santa Maria Novella, the friars’ 400-year-old pharmacy, for the sensory footnote.
