HomeAmalfi Coast › By boat

The Amalfi Coast is a boat trip, not a bus ride.

The coast road is beautiful for the first twenty minutes and a winding queue after that. The water is the way — here's every version of it, compared.

We'll say it plainly: if you only do one paid thing on the Amalfi Coast, do it from the water. The towns were built to be seen from the sea — Positano stacked like theater seating, the cliffs, the grottoes you simply cannot reach by road.

The choice is between a small-group cruise (cheaper, fixed route, good fun) and a private charter (your route, your swim stops, your budget). Capri is its own decision: a full day, and worth it — but don't try to staple it onto a coast cruise.

Our take: book the boat for the calmest forecast day of your stay, not the first day. Swells don't cancel trips as often as they should — a flat sea is the whole experience.

Quick answers

What if the sea is rough?

Operators cancel for safety in real swells and refund or rebook — but marginal days still sail and aren't much fun. If your forecast shows one glassy day, that's your boat day; keep it flexible.

Positano, Amalfi or Sorrento as a base?

For boats it barely matters — routes overlap. For everything else: Sorrento has the trains and lower prices, Positano has the postcard and the stairs, Amalfi sits in between.

Is Capri doable in half a day?

No. Between crossings and the island's own logistics, half a day gives you a harbor and a queue. Full day or another trip.
