Most people queue for St Mark's, glance at the palace next door, and move on. Backwards, in our view. The Doge's Palace is the best interior in Venice — the world's largest oil painting, the dungeons, and the Bridge of Sighs crossed from the inside, which is the only way that means anything.

The upgrade that matters here is the Secret Itineraries tour: the hidden offices, the torture room, Casanova's cell and the roof spaces — rooms you cannot see on any standard ticket. Capacity is small and it books out early.

Our take: do the Secret Itineraries at opening, then walk the main palace rooms with the same ticket afterwards. Two visits for one entry, before the piazza fills.

Quick answers

Is the Secret Itineraries tour suitable for kids?

Older kids love it — dungeons, escapes, a roof. Under ~8 it's long and narrow-corridored. Note there's no shortcut out once it starts.

Does the palace ticket include St Mark's?

No — separate entries, separate queues. That's exactly what the combo option solves.

How early does it sell out?

The Secret Itineraries has small fixed groups: in season, book at least a week out. The standard palace entry is easier but the opening slots still go first.
