GNAM: the Rome museum where Canova and Pollock share a roof

Two minutes from the Borghese gardens, the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art covers two centuries of art with almost none of the queues. Most visitors never make it here. Their loss.

Why the GNAM is worth your Rome time

Rome overwhelms you with antiquity and Baroque, then most itineraries stop around 1700. The GNAM is where the story continues. You start in a hall dominated by Antonio Canova’s Hercules and Lichas (1795–1815), Hercules mad with pain hurling the boy Lichas into the sea, and you can end in front of a burnt jute sack by Alberto Burri. In between: Francesco Hayez and Risorgimento painting, the Macchiaioli. Giovanni Fattori’s battle scenes, Silvestro Lega’s quiet interiors, and a foreign roll call that includes Monet’s water lilies, Van Gogh, Klimt’s Three Ages of Woman, Cézanne, Mondrian, Pollock and Warhol.

The building matters too. Cesare Bazzani’s white Palazzo delle Belle Arti went up for the 1911 International Exposition and is itself a document of what official Italy wanted art to look like at the time.

A museum shaped by a remarkable woman

The collection’s 20th-century courage owes a lot to Palma Bucarelli, superintendent from 1941 to 1975. She protected works during the war and then opened the museum to international avant-gardes when that was genuinely controversial, her buy of Burri’s Grande Sacco triggered questions in parliament. The current rehang is deliberately non-chronological, so a 19th-century canvas can hang near a post-war experiment. Some visitors find it disorienting. Treat it as the museum arguing that the conversation between eras is the point.

Practical: combining Valle Giulia with Villa Borghese

The GNAM sits on the northern edge of the Villa Borghese park, ten minutes on foot from the Galleria Borghese and next door to the Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia. That makes Valle Giulia the best half-day museum cluster in Rome outside the center: Etruscans, Baroque and the modern era within a short walk, with the park in between for a break. Borghese requires timed booking. The GNAM almost never does. First Sundays of the month are free, and busier for it.
