You board a small boat, someone pulls a rope, and you glide along a black river under the mountain. No other cave in Italy starts like this, and none in Europe hides a Bronze Age village on stilts.

The visit begins on water. The Negro river flows out of the mountain here, and the first stretch of the caves is crossed on a small boat drawn along a fixed line, a few minutes of genuine silence that no walk-in cave can match. Beyond the landing, the route continues on foot through roughly three kilometers of karst formations: the Great Hall with its 24-metre ceiling, the Sala delle Spugne, and the pair of joined stalactite-stalagmite columns guides call “the kiss”.
The caves’ second claim is archaeological. In the second millennium BC people built a pile-dwelling settlement inside the cave mouth, over the river, the only case known in Europe. The finds are now split between the Pigorini museum in Rome, the MANN in Naples and the provincial museum of Salerno, but the MIdA Foundation’s museums by the entrance tell the story well. It rewrites the easy idea of caves as mere shelters: this was a chosen, engineered place to live.

Pertosa sits just off the A2 motorway, about an hour from Salerno, an easy stop on the way to the Cilento coast or Paestum. Tours run on fixed schedules and the cave stays around 16°C all year, so bring a layer even in August. Book the longer route if you can: the short one skips some of the best halls.
