Italo train guide 2025: how to use Italy's private high-speed railway

Italo (Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori. NTV) is Italy's private high-speed rail operator, launched in 2012 as the first private competitor to Trenitalia on the Italian high-speed network. After a shaky start (the company went bankrupt and was relaunched under new ownership in 2018), Italo is now a mature, well-run operation that frequently offers significantly cheaper fares than Trenitalia on the same routes, and occasionally offers better rolling stock, better food service, and comparable punctuality. This guide gives the practical Italo guide that regular Italy travelers use.

Italo routes: where the trains goItalo operates exclusively on the Italian high-speed network (the Alta Velocità infrastructure), which means it only serves cities connected by high-speed lines. The main Italo routes (2025): Turin-Milan-Florence-Rome-Naples (the backbone route, with multiple daily departures). Milan-Venice (via Padua). Rome-Venice. Milan-Bologna. Naples-Reggio Calabria (Italo operates this route, unlike Trenitalia's full southern Italy network, important difference). Italo doesn't serve: smaller cities on conventional rail lines (Siena, Perugia, Cinque Terre, Orvieto, Spoleto, these are Trenitalia only). The islands (Sicily trains use conventional lines, no Italo service). Or any international route (Paris, Zurich, Vienna. Trenitalia only via the Trenitalia Thello partnership). If your Italy itinerary includes only major cities on the high-speed spine, Italo is a fully viable alternative to Trenitalia.
Italo vs Trenitalia: the price comparison realityThe Italo vs Trenitalia fare comparison: Italo's dynamic pricing mirrors Trenitalia's structure, but the two systems are independent, at any given moment on the same route, one may be significantly cheaper than the other. The rule of thumb: book Italo and Trenitalia simultaneously (both at italotreno.it and trenitalia.com) for the same date and compare the lowest available fare in the same class. In our experience: Italo is cheaper approximately 40% of the time, Trenitalia cheaper 40% of the time, and equivalent 20% of the time. Early booking advantage on Italo: fares released 4 months ahead at the lowest "Promo" rate (€9-19 for many journeys on the spine routes). The same journey at 2 days' notice costs €35-80. Subscribe to Italo's email newsletter for flash fare promotions, the "Italo Più" loyalty program also offers member-exclusive promotional fares.
Italo ticket classes: Smart, Comfort, PrimaItalo classes on the AGV/EVO trainsets: Smart (standard class, 2-2 seat configuration, equivalent to Trenitalia's Economy/Base fare class, reclinable seats, power outlets). Comfort (equivalent to business class, 2-1 seat configuration, wider seats, welcome drink, free Wi-Fi, quieter environment). Prima (the premium class, 1-1 wide seats, full at-seat meal service, dedicated lounge access at major stations). Price comparison: Smart typically €9-45 on promotional fares, €25-80 standard. Comfort €35-90. Prima €60-150. The smart decision: Italo Comfort is frequently priced below Trenitalia's equivalent Business class ("Business" on Frecciarossa) while offering comparable or superior comfort, compare both when booking. The Prima lounge at Roma Termini (Italo Club) provides work space, coffee service, and charging, useful if arriving early for departure.
Buying Italo tickets: the practical guideBuying Italo tickets (2025): the Italo app (iOS/Android, the most efficient booking method, includes QR code tickets accepted by all onboard conductors). Italotreno.it (website, full booking functionality). Station self-service machines (accept card payment, no surcharge). And Italo ticket offices at major stations (slower than app, no price advantage). Surcharges to avoid: booking by phone (€2 fee per ticket, avoidable by using the app or website). Cash payment at station (some machines have a €1 surcharge, use card). Group discounts: Italo offers "Go Family" fares (children under 15 travel at reduced rate with paying adult) and "Go Group" (25% discount for groups of 6+, booked via the website group booking form). The Italo Più loyalty card (free registration): accumulates points for free journeys, provides access to promotional fares not available to non-members, and includes priority boarding at selected stations.
Italo punctuality and reliabilityItalo punctuality statistics (2025): Italo's published on-time performance (arriving within 15 min of scheduled arrival): approximately 85-88% of services. Trenitalia Frecciarossa equivalent: approximately 82-86%. The difference is marginal, both high-speed services are significantly more punctual than the conventional regional train network (approximately 70% on-time). Disruption causes: Italo shares the same high-speed infrastructure as Trenitalia, when incidents on the network occur, both operators are affected equally. Major causes of Italo delays: infrastructure maintenance (planned engineering works, typically scheduled overnight but occasionally causing daytime delays). Weather events (winter ice and summer heat on the tracks). And accidents on conventional sections where the high-speed train must operate at reduced speed. Compensation policy: if your Italo train arrives more than 60 min late, you are entitled to 25% of the ticket price in Italo credits (25% reimbursement for 60-119 min delay; 50% for 120+ min delay).
Italo stations: where to board and what's thereItalo uses the same stations as Trenitalia at most locations, but note exceptions: in some cities, Italo stops at a different station. Key differences: in Milan, Italo departs from Milano Centrale (same as Trenitalia) but also from Porta Garibaldi station (different from most Trenitalia services, check your specific ticket). In Rome: Roma Termini for most services, but some Italo services use Roma Tiburtina (15 min by Metro or bus from Termini, factor this into planning). Naples: Napoli Centrale and Napoli Afragola (a new station 12km from the city center, served by some Italo services, verify your specific service arrives at Centrale not Afragola). Venice: Santa Lucia station (same as Trenitalia). The Italo Club lounges (for Prima class and Italo Più premium members) are at Roma Termini, Milano Centrale, Napoli Centrale, and Florence Santa Maria Novella.

Is Italo train worth it compared to Trenitalia?

Italo is worth considering for every Italy high-speed rail journey, the fare comparison between Italo and Trenitalia should be done at booking time, as either can be cheaper depending on route, timing, and advance booking period. Italo is specifically worth choosing when: the Italo promotional fare ("Promo" or "Super Promo") is significantly cheaper than the Trenitalia equivalent. You are traveling on routes where Italo's rolling stock (the AGV and EVO trainsets) offers a comfort advantage. Or you have accumulated Italo Più loyalty points that reduce the effective ticket cost. Italo isn't worth choosing when: your journey includes stations not served by Italo (regional cities, southern Italy off the high-speed spine). Or when Trenitalia offers a lower fare for the same class on the same route.

How do you book Italo train tickets?

Italo train tickets can be booked via: the Italo app (iOS/Android, the most efficient method, QR code tickets). The website at italotreno.it. Self-service machines at major Italian stations. And Italo ticket offices. No booking surcharge applies for online or app buys. Promotional fares ("Promo" category) are released approximately 4 months ahead and are typically the cheapest available, set an alert or check the app immediately when your travel window opens. Group bookings (6+ passengers): use the group booking form on the website for 25% discount. Children under 15 with a paying adult: discounted "Go Family" rates available at booking. Important: Italo tickets must be validated (or the QR code confirmed as active) before boarding, there is no additional validation step required beyond showing the QR code to the conductor.

How Italy got two competing high-speed railways, and why the EU forced it

Italy's Italo train exists because of European Union competition law, specifically the railway liberalization directives (the "Railway Packages" of 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2012) that required EU member states to open their national rail networks to competition. Italy's national carrier Trenitalia (part of Ferrovie dello Stato, the state railway group) had operated the high-speed network as a monopoly since the first lines opened in the 1990s. The EU liberalization directives required Italy to allow access to the network on non-discriminatory terms, which Luca Cordero di Montezemolo (then president of Ferrari and a significant figure in Italian business) and a group of investors used to launch Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV) in 2006, with Italo beginning services in April 2012. The launch was rocky: NTV carried fewer passengers than projected, the 2008 financial crisis had reduced business travel (the primary target market), and the price war with Trenitalia eroded margins. The company filed for receivership in 2018 and was bought by Global Infrastructure Partners, an American investment fund, which injected capital and stabilized operations. The competition between Italo and Trenitalia has delivered lower fares on Italian high-speed routes compared to the equivalent French (SNCF monopoly) or German (DB near-monopoly) networks, the EU's intention has been achieved, in the specific Italian implementation.
