Here is the honest truth: Italy's best beaches aren't near Rome, Florence, or Venice. They are on the islands and the far south, and the most beautiful of all are in Sardinia, with water the color of a Caribbean postcard. So a real beach week skips the art cities and commits to one island. This route does Sardinia, one zone at a time, beach-hopping by car and by ferry or boat trip.

Fly into Olbia for the north or Cagliari for the south, rent a car for the coves the buses miss, and pick one end rather than circling the whole island. Book a boat day to reach the beaches you can only get to by sea, and go for the water, not a checklist.

7-Day Sardinia Beach Itinerary

Days 1-3: The North and Costa Smeralda

Base near the glamorous Costa Smeralda: the emerald coves of the coast, a boat day to the Maddalena archipelago by ferry or tour, and the wild beaches around. Sunbathe, swim, snorkel, repeat.

Days 4-5: A Slow Middle

Drift down the coast or inland for a change of pace: a quieter beach stretch, a fishing town for seafood, and a relaxed day off the sand among the hills or a nuraghe ruin.

Days 6-7: The South

End near Cagliari and Villasimius: the long white beaches of the southeast, a final boat day, and the lively capital for dinner. The most swimmable water in Italy.

Q&A: Beaches in Italy

Where are Italy's best beaches?

On the islands and the deep south: Sardinia above all, then Sicily and Puglia. The water by the famous art cities is far less special, so a beach trip means committing to the coast, not mixing in Rome or Florence.

Why focus on one island?

Because Sardinia is large and the joy is in slow beach days, not driving. Pick the north or the south, settle in, and beach-hop locally rather than trying to circle the whole coast in a week.

Do I need a car?

Yes, on Sardinia. The most beautiful coves are reached by small roads and short walks that buses don't serve. Pair the car with a boat day for the beaches only reachable by sea.

Can I combine beaches with cities?

Not well in a week. The beaches are islands away from the art cities. If you want both, give yourself more time and treat them as separate legs rather than squeezing them together.

When should I go?

June and September for warm seas and fewer crowds than peak August, when Italians flood the island and prices soar. May and early October are lovely but the sea is cooler. Winter is quiet and many resorts close.
