A romantic trip is ruined by a packed schedule. The secret is fewer places, longer stays, and time to do nothing together but watch the light change. This week picks three of Italy's dreamiest settings: Venice for canals and gondolas, the Tuscany countryside for golden hills and wine, and the Amalfi Coast for cliffs and sea. Two or three nights each, and sunsets booked before sights.

Splurge on a room with a view in each, move by comfortable train, and leave whole afternoons unplanned. Book the gondola, the countryside dinners, and a clifftop table ahead. The rest is just being together.

7-Day Romantic Italy Itinerary

Days 1-2: Venice

The most romantic city on earth: a sunset gondola through quiet back canals, a spritz on a hidden campo, and getting lost together after the day-trippers leave. Stay near the water and wander at night.

Days 3-5: The Tuscan Countryside

A farm stay or villa in the Tuscany hills: vineyard lunches, a Chianti tasting, golden sunsets over cypress rows, and an easy day in Siena or a hill town. Slow, sun-soaked, and intimate.

Days 6-7: The Amalfi Coast

A clifftop hotel in Positano or Ravello: a private boat hour, lemon-scented terraces, and dinner with the sea below. The grand romantic finish, by ferry not the road.

Q&A: A Romantic Week in Italy

How many places should a couple visit in a week?

Three at most, with longer stays. Romance needs unhurried time, so resist cramming. Two or three dreamy bases with whole free afternoons beat a checklist of cities seen from a train window.

Is a gondola ride worth it?

For the romance, yes, especially at sunset through the quiet back canals rather than the busy Grand Canal. Agree the price first, and it becomes a memory you keep.

Where should we stay for the views?

By the water in Venice, in a hillside villa or farm stay in Tuscany, and in a clifftop room in Positano or Ravello. A great view is worth the splurge on a trip like this.

How do we get around as a couple?

By comfortable fast train between regions, then ferries on the coast. No car is needed except perhaps in deep Tuscany, where a transfer or driver keeps it relaxed.

When should we go?

Late spring and early fall for warm, golden weather, long light, and fewer crowds, the most romantic seasons. Summer is hot and busy, and the coast quiets in winter.
