A castle on an islet, tied to the mainland by a strip of sand, in the middle of Italy’s largest marine reserve. Calabria’s Ionian coast keeps its best postcard here.

Le Castella never housed a noble court. It was built to do one job: watch the sea and shelter soldiers against raids. The layers tell the story of the Ionian coast in miniature, foundations from the age of Magna Graecia, a cylindrical Angevin keep from the 13th century (three floors, a spiral stair, a cistern for sieges), then the squat Aragonese bastions raised by Andrea Carafa between 1510 and 1526, when Ottoman raids were the coast’s daily fear. Local memory ties the place to Hannibal, said to have made his last Italian camp near here, and to the corsair era of Uccialì, a Calabrian who was captured in one of those raids and rose to become an Ottoman admiral.
The image that sells Le Castella is the approach: the fortress sits on a rocky islet connected to the village by a narrow isthmus, so at times it seems to float. The water around it belongs to the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area, established in 1991 and the largest in Italy, glass-bottom boat trips and snorkelling run in season, and the seabed is part of the visit as much as the walls.

Le Castella is a frazione (outlying hamlet) of Isola di Capo Rizzuto, about 20 km south of Crotone. You'll want a car, as public transport on this stretch is thin. The natural pairing is the cape itself: Capo Colonna, with the lone surviving column of the temple of Hera Lacinia, is a short drive up the coast, and Crotone’s archaeological museum completes the Magna Graecia picture. Summer evenings, when the fortress is lit, are the best time for the photograph everyone comes for.
