Macerata is a university city of 42,000 inhabitants on a hill in the central Marche at 315 metres above sea level, 45km from the Adriatic coast and 50km from the Apennine ridge. The Sferisterio and the Opera Festival
The Sferisterio di Macerata was built between 1820 and 1829 as an arena for the gioco del pallone col bracciale, a traditional Italian ball game played with a wooden bracer. The architect Ireneo Aleandri designed it in neoclassical style: a curved semicircular bleacher facing a long rectangular playing field, with capacity for 7,000 spectators. In 1921, it was first used for opera. Verdi's Aida, conducted by Tullio Serafin. Since 1967 the Macerata Opera Festival has used it as its permanent venue. The performances of grand opera in this space, with the Marche hillside as backdrop and the summer night sky overhead, are among the most atmospheric in Italy. The festival (sferisterio.it) runs four productions per season (late July-mid August), each performed multiple times. Tickets €25-150. Booking opens in spring and the best seats sell quickly.
The Pinacoteca Civica and the Historic Center
The Pinacoteca Civica di Macerata (Palazzo Buonaccorsi, Via Don Minzoni 24) has a collection of regional Marche painting plus two exceptional works: the Madonna della Misericordia by Cola dell'Amatrice (16th century, the definitive work of this regional master) and a Rubens sketch of the Assumption, one of the few documented Rubens works in the Marche. The Palazzo Buonaccorsi itself is a fine late-Baroque residence with an extraordinary carriage museum (Museo delle Carrozze) on the ground floor.
