Stone ancestors, carved before the pyramids were old
The statue-menhirs of Laconi are standing stones carved with human features, a stylised face, arms, sometimes a dagger for the male figures, raised in the third millennium BC, long before the first nuraghe went up. Locals called them perdas fittas, planted stones. Archaeologists read them as ancestors, chiefs or protective figures. The honest answer is that nobody is certain, and the museum doesn't pretend otherwise. They are among the earliest attempts on the island to give a human face to stone, and standing in a room of them is quietly unsettling in the best way.
The setting adds to it: the collection fills Palazzo Aymerich, an elegant 19th-century palace designed by Gaetano Cima for the local marquis family, so five-thousand-year-old stones stand under ceilings made for chandeliers.
The rest of Laconi
Laconi is a real hill town, not a museum shell. Behind the palace, the Parco Aymerich is one of central Sardinia’s loveliest walks, woods, springs and the ruins of a medieval castle. The town is also the birthplace of Sant’Ignazio da Laconi, one of Sardinia’s most loved saints, whose humble birth house is kept as a small shrine. Together it makes an unhurried half day, and the drive through the Sarcidano is part of the reward.

Getting there and combining it
Laconi sits roughly between Cagliari and Nuoro. By car it is about 1h15 from Cagliari. The natural pairing is Su Nuraxi di Barumini, 40 minutes south, menhirs in the morning, the UNESCO nuraghe in the afternoon gives you the whole arc of prehistoric Sardinia in one day.
