Cabras: the giants a plough brought back

A farmer ploughing near the lagoon hit a stone head in March 1974. Out of thousands of fragments came boxers, archers and warriors over two metres tall, the only colossal statues the Nuragic world ever made.

An accidental discovery, a long neglect

The story is half the wonder. In March 1974 a plough near the Cabras lagoon turned up a stone head with huge concentric-circle eyes. Excavation produced thousands of fragments of colossal statues, boxers with shields over their heads, archers, warriors, buried over a Nuragic necropolis. Then, for decades, the fragments sat in storerooms, almost forgotten, until a landmark restoration reassembled them. They are the only monumental, in-the-round statues the Nuragic civilisation ever produced, among the oldest in the Mediterranean, and among the great archaeological finds of the twentieth century.

Reading the giants

Who they were, heroised ancestors? guardians of the necropolis?, and why they were smashed remain open questions. The honest label is “we don't know”, and the mystery is part of their power. The Cabras museum shows its group alongside stone models of nuraghi found with them. Other giants stand in the Cagliari museum. Seeing both halves is the full experience.

The Sinis around them

Cabras anchors the Sinis peninsula: the quartz-grain beach of Is Arutas, the lagoon famous for bottarga, and the Phoenician-Roman city of Tharros ten minutes away, where the giants’ world met the sea traders’. It is the best archaeology-plus-beach day in western Sardinia. Oristano is 15 minutes, Cagliari about 1h15 by car.
