Naples is one of the most alive cities in Europe, and four days lets you do it justice: the chaotic historic center with the world's best pizza, the first-rate archaeology, the ruins of Pompeii, and one easy island or coast day. The pace that works is one big focus a day with long lunches, not a frantic dash that also tries to cram in the whole Amalfi Coast. Embrace the city's intensity. It is the point.

The center is walkable but full-on, so go on foot and stay alert. Book Pompeii or a guide, and take the simple Circumvesuviana train. No car in the city. It is chaos.

4-Day Naples Itinerary

Naples, Italy, A view over Bay of Naples, Port of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius
Naples, Italy, A view over Bay of Naples, Port of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius · via Wikimedia Commons

Day 1: The Historic Center and Pizza

Walk Spaccanapoli, the Duomo with the San Gennaro chapel, and the underground city, then lunch on a proper Neapolitan pizza, the city that invented it. Easy afternoon, lively evening piazzas.

Day 2: Archaeology and the Waterfront

The Archaeological Museum, home to the treasures dug from Pompeii, then the Capodimonte gallery or the seafront and the Castel dell'Ovo. An art-and-air day.

Day 3: Pompeii

The Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii for the morning and early afternoon, ideally with a guide, with good shoes and water. Add Vesuvius if you have the energy. Back to Naples for dinner.

Day 4: One Island Day, Capri

A ferry to Capri for the day: the town, the views, a boat around the sea stacks. One island, relaxed, home for a final pizza. Don't also try to add the Amalfi Coast.

Q&A: Naples in 4 Days

Is 4 days enough for Naples?

Yes, comfortably: the center and pizza, the archaeology, Pompeii, and one island day, with downtime. It is also a great base for the bay, though four days isn't enough to add the full Amalfi Coast too.

How do I get to Pompeii?

The Circumvesuviana train from Naples to the Pompei Scavi stop, around forty minutes. Book a guided tour or your entry online to skip the line, and wear sturdy shoes for the stone.

Where do I eat the best pizza?

At the historic pizzerias of the center. Expect a queue at the famous ones, and the simple margherita or marinara is the test. The high-turnover spots are delicious and cheap.

Is Naples safe?

The center is fine with normal city sense: watch your bag and phone in crowds and on transport, especially near the station. Millions visit happily. Just stay aware.

When should I go?

Spring and fall for comfortable city walking and Pompeii without the punishing summer heat on the open ruins. Winter is mild and the city is as lively as ever.
