Antelami: the greatest sculptor of the Italian Romanesque
Start with the stone. Inside the cathedral, Benedetto Antelami’s Deposition (1178) is one of the summits of European Romanesque sculpture, solemn, precise, strangely modern. Then cross the square to his Baptistery, begun in 1196: an octagon (eight, the number of resurrection and baptism) clad in pink Verona marble, ringed by four tiers of loggias, with the sculpted cycle of the Months inside. Art historians treat it as the monument that marks Italy’s passage from Romanesque to Gothic.
Correggio: the dome that anticipated the Baroque
Three and a half centuries later, Antonio Allegri da Correggio painted the cathedral dome with the Assumption of the Virgin (c. 1524–1530): the Virgin rises through a vortex of angels, seen steeply from below, in a perspectival plunge that had no precedent. Contemporaries were baffled. The great illusionistic domes of the Baroque all descend from it. Bring a coin for the lights and give your neck five full minutes.
