Redipuglia: a staircase for one hundred thousand

Twenty-two giant steps climb the hillside, and on every one the same word repeats: PRESENTE. Italy’s largest war memorial answers the roll-call for the soldiers who cannot.

What you are looking at

The Isonzo front ran through these hills. Twelve battles bled through them between 1915 and 1917. Redipuglia, inaugurated in 1938, gathers more than one hundred thousand fallen, about forty thousand named, sixty thousand unknown, on a monumental staircase of twenty-two steps climbing Monte Sei Busi. The repeated bronze word PRESENTE is the answer a soldier gives at roll-call: the architecture makes the dead answer forever. At the base lies Emanuele Filiberto, Duke of Aosta, commander of the Third Army, buried among his men at his own request.

Reading it honestly

The shrine is also a document of when it was built: 1938, the late Fascist years, and the rhetoric of the regime is in its bones, the scale, the discipline, the single word instead of names. Visiting well means holding both truths: real grief for a generation, and a state machine putting that grief to work. Across the road, the quieter Colle Sant’Elia preserves the first 1920s remembrance park, and the small museum fills in the Isonzo front’s history.

Practical

Redipuglia is just off the Trieste–Gorizia road and has its own railway halt. By car it pairs naturally with Aquileia (15 minutes) and Miramare on the way into Trieste. Entrance is free. Go late in the day if you can, the low sun raking across the steps is when the place says most.
