Honest truth from a guide: Sorrento is a lovely, easy town, but it is really a base and transport hub rather than a big sight in itself. That is its strength. In two days you use it to reach the area's heavy hitters: Pompeii one day by the local train, and Capri by ferry the next, with Sorrento's cafes and clifftop sunsets to come home to. Don't try to also squeeze in the whole Amalfi Coast. Pick the two best outings.

Sorrento sits on the train line and the ferry routes, so you don't need a car, you don't want one. Book Pompeii or a guide and the Capri ferry ahead in season, and wear good shoes for the ruins.

2-Day Sorrento Itinerary

Day 1: Pompeii

Take the Circumvesuviana train a short way to Pompeii for the morning and early afternoon, ideally with a guide so the buried Roman city comes alive, with water and sturdy shoes for the sun and stone. Back to Sorrento for a wander through its lanes and a sunset aperitivo (pre-dinner drink with snacks) over the bay.

Day 2: Capri by Ferry

A day on the island of Capri, a quick ferry from Sorrento's harbor: the town and its piazzetta (small square), a chairlift or walk for the views, and a boat around the sea stacks. One island, relaxed, home to Sorrento for dinner and limoncello.

Q&A: Sorrento in 2 Days

Is Sorrento worth visiting?

Yes, as a comfortable, well-connected base. The town itself is pleasant rather than packed with sights, but its train and ferry links make it the ideal launch pad for Pompeii, Capri, and the wider bay. Two days here is well spent.

How do I get to Pompeii from Sorrento?

The Circumvesuviana commuter train runs from Sorrento to the Pompei Scavi stop in around half an hour. Book your entry or a guided tour ahead to skip the line, and wear sturdy shoes for the uneven ruins.

How do I get to Capri?

By ferry or hydrofoil from Sorrento's Marina Piccola, a short crossing. Go early to beat the day-trip crowds, and book ahead in summer when boats fill up.

Can I add the Amalfi Coast too?

Not well in two days. Pompeii and Capri already fill them. The Amalfi Coast is a separate trip or a longer stay. Keep these two days focused and unhurried.

When should I go?

Spring and fall for comfortable Pompeii weather and calm seas to Capri. Summer is hot and busy on both. Much of the area is quieter but still open in the shoulder seasons.
