The David was once part of a Tuscan mountain. The Apuan Alps supplied the marble of empires and masterpieces, and remain a jagged, cave-riddled range that looks nothing like the rest of Tuscany.

The white on the Apuane isn't snow: it is exposed marble, cut into terraces by two thousand years of quarrying. Romans took stone here for their temples. Michelangelo climbed to the quarries personally to choose blocks for the David and the Pietà; today Carrara still ships white marble across the world. The range is called “Alps” despite being in Tuscany because it behaves like them, sudden jagged crests, deep valleys, real exposure, even though Monte Pisanino tops out under 2,000 metres.
Quarry tours, from Colonnata (also the home of lardo, cured in marble basins) and Fantiscritti above Carrara, are the signature experience: jeep rides into a white amphitheater that feels lunar. Underneath runs the other Apuane: the Antro del Corchia near Levigliani, one of Italy’s largest cave systems, with a well-run show route. And there is an honest tension to acknowledge: the same extraction that built the Pietà is eating the mountains, and the debate between industry and conservation is loud and unresolved. Seeing the quarries makes you part of that conversation.

Gateways are Carrara and Massa on the coast side, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana inland. The Garfagnana valley road gives the best views of the crests. Combine with Pisa or the Cinque Terre, both under an hour. Walkers should treat the ridges with alpine respect, the modest altitudes mislead.
