Sa Costa: The Painted Historic Quarter
The Sa Costa district in Bosa follows the Temo river and the hillside behind it, a system of lanes (cussois) connecting houses that in many cases haven't changed their function or appearance since the medieval period. The painting of facades in warm colors was a Sardinian practice also documented in Bosa for centuries, records from the 18th century describe the chromatic variety of the houses with the same combination of surprise and delight that modern visitors express. The current palette (restored and in some cases recolored in the 20th century) is slightly more vivid than the original but maintains the essential character. Walking Sa Costa in the early morning light, when the eastern sun hits the facades directly, is the experience that justifies the trip more than any monument.

Malvasia di Bosa: One of Italy's Rarest Wines
The Malvasia di Bosa DOC is produced from Malvasia di Sardegna grapes grown on the volcanic basalt soils around the town and along the Temo valley. The wine can be produced in several styles: secco (dry, rare, extraordinary with local fish), amabile (semi-sweet), and dolce naturale (naturally sweet, made from partially dried grapes). The dry Malvasia di Bosa is one of the most unusual white wines in Italy, amber-golden in color, oxidatively aged in the solera-style manner of Jerez sherry, with flavours of almonds, apricot, and sea salt that are impossible to categorise in the conventional Italian white wine vocabulary. Production is tiny, perhaps 50,000 bottles annually from the entire DOC. Almost none is exported. Drinking a glass of dry Malvasia di Bosa in the town that produces it is a genuinely unrepeatable experience. The local producers (Columbu, Giovanni Battista Columbu being the most famous) sell directly. Visits by appointment.
Castello Malaspina and the Churches
The castle of the Malaspina (11th century, expanded 14th century) dominates Bosa from the hilltop. The castle interior is open in summer. The walk up through Sa Costa is the main attraction, the castle's value is as much as a viewpoint over the Temo valley and the coast as for its architectural interest. The church of the Addolorata within the castle enclosure has 14th-century Catalan Gothic frescoes in extraordinary condition, a rare example of Aragonese Gothic painting in Sardinia. The cathedral (Duomo) in the lower town has an 18th-century baroque interior with a large painting attributed (with some dispute) to Bartolomeo Figari. San Pietro Extramuros (outside the town walls, 20 minutes by foot along the river) is the most important single building in the area. Romanesque of 1073, with a Pisan-influenced facade and an interior that has maintained its medieval spatial quality without significant alteration.

How do I get to Bosa?
By car from Cagliari: 180km, 2h15 via Oristano. From Alghero (the nearest airport): 65km, 1h. From Sassari: 90km, 1h30. Bosa isn't on the main Sardinian rail network. ARST buses connect Bosa to Macomer (on the Cagliari-Sassari rail line) and to Alghero and Sassari. The road from Alghero to Bosa along the SS291 coastal road is one of the most dramatic drives in Sardinia, cliffs, coves, and the Temo valley approach. Without a car, the combination of bus to Macomer and bus to Bosa works but is slow.
What is the best time to visit Bosa?
May-June and September-October for the ideal combination of warm weather, functional beach (Bosa Marina, 3km from town), and moderate crowds. Bosa's Carnevale (February) is one of the most distinctive in Sardinia, the Thurpos, a masked procession in black where participants simulate blind men guided by rope, is one of the strangest and most compelling folk traditions on the island. July-August: hot, the beach at Bosa Marina fills up with Sardinian families, the town itself remains manageable.

Yes, it is the beach area for Bosa, 3km downstream on the Temo and at the river mouth. The beach itself (sandy, wide, long, water quality excellent) is one of the better beaches on the western Sardinian coast. The tower above the beach (Torre Aragonese) is a 16th-century coastal defence tower still in excellent condition. The fish restaurants at Bosa Marina are genuinely good and significantly cheaper than equivalent quality on the Costa Smeralda.
What food is Bosa known for?
The local cuisine of the Planargia (the agricultural area around Bosa): bottarga di muggine (mullet roe, dried and pressed, different from tuna bottarga, more delicate), fresh river eels from the Temo (anguille, cooked with myrtle and local herbs), local cheesemaking (Fiore Sardo and local pecorino), and the sweets typical of the Oristano area (seadas, fried pasta filled with fresh cheese, drizzled with honey).
