Feltre is a city of 20,000 inhabitants in the province of Belluno in the Veneto, 65km north of Treviso at the foot of the Dolomites pre-Alps. Its historic center, the hilltop medieval and Renaissance city enclosed by 16th-century Venetian walls, is one of the most complete and most beautiful small city centers in northern Italy. The facades of the main street (Via Mezzaterra) and the side streets are frescoed in the 15th-16th century manner of the Veneto, painted architectural frames, simulated loggias, mythological figures, creating a streetscape that is uniquely photogenic without being in any way organized for photography. Feltre looks the way it looks because it always has, not because someone decided to restore it for tourism. This is the difference between a stage set and a city.

The Historic Center and the Frescoed Facades

Via Mezzaterra and the connected Piazza Maggiore constitute the heart of Feltre's historic center. The frescoed facades, painted in the 15th-16th century with a vocabulary of architectural simulation (columns, arches, cornices) and figurative subjects (mythological scenes, family portraits, heraldic motifs), are the most sustained example of the Veneto facade-painting tradition outside Venice. The technique was widespread in the Veneto under the influence of Giorgione and Pordenone: trompe-l'oeil architectural elements that made modest buildings look more imposing, at a fraction of the cost of actual stone carving. In Feltre, the tradition persisted until the 18th century and was maintained in next centuries rather than whitewashed as happened in many Veneto cities. Piazza Maggiore (with the Venetian lion column and the loggia of the Palazzo della Ragione) is the finest small piazza in the Veneto outside Verona.

Museums and Monuments

The Museo Civico di Feltre (in the Palazzo Villabruna) has a collection of Veneto painting including works by Cima da Conegliano, Palma il Giovane, and Pietro Marescalchi (the 16th-century Feltrine painter who is the city's most important artistic product). The Duomo (Cathedral of San Pietro), the churches of Ognissanti and San Rocco, and the Venetian walls (walkable for 2km with views over the Piave valley and the pre-Alpine landscape) complete the essential itinerary.
