Lampedusa (the southernmost island of Italy. 20.2 km², at 35°30'N latitude, 205km south of the nearest point of Sicily and 113km north of the Tunisian coast): the Italian island that is geographically, geologically, and biologically African rather than European: the Lampedusa geology (calcareous African plate rather than the Sicilian-Italian tectonic unit, the island sits on the African plate, not the European plate, making it literally a piece of Africa that belongs administratively to Italy), the Lampedusa climate (the semi-arid North African climate, with summer temperatures reaching 40°C and winter averages of 15-17°C, warmer than any other Italian location), and the Lampedusa wildlife (the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting on the Spiaggia dei Conigli beach from May to September, the northernmost major Mediterranean sea turtle nesting site, the Lampedusa population representing the most important nesting colony in the central Mediterranean).

The Spiaggia dei Conigli (Rabbit Beach, the beach on the western end of Lampedusa, accessible by boat or by foot from the Cala Croce path in 45 minutes): the beach that TripAdvisor, Condé Nast Traveler, and the International Tourism Film Festival have repeatedly listed among the world's best beaches for the specific combination of the powdery white calcareous sand, the Caribbean-blue shallow water (the specific Lampedusa water clarity and color produced by the African plate calcareous substrate and the absence of river discharge in the surrounding 200km), and the complete absence of any commercial development on the beach itself (the protected marine reserve status prohibits any permanent structure on the Conigli beach).

Lampedusa: Spiaggia dei Conigli, Sea Turtles, and the Island

The Spiaggia dei Conigli Visit

Spiaggia dei Conigli access (the protected beach with restricted access, the Riserva Naturale Orientata Isola di Lampedusa, managed by the WWF, limits daily visitor numbers to protect the sea turtle nesting): in June-September (the turtle nesting season), access to the Conigli beach is restricted to morning entry (before 10:00) and the specific zones designated to avoid disturbing the nests. Book the boat trip from the Lampedusa harbor (the most practical access, the 20-minute boat from the main harbor with return, approximately €20) in advance during July-August. The beach is freely walkable from the path in May, June, and September when demand is lower. The Conigli water temperature: 26-28°C in August, the warmest seawater in Italy.

Sea Turtle Observation

Lampedusa sea turtle experience (the Caretta caretta nesting program, the WWF-Lampedusa marine reserve that monitors the nesting sites and organizes the specific night observation sessions when nesting females come ashore (June-July) and when the hatchlings emerge (August-September)): the organized turtle observation (the WWF night tour, bookable through the Lampedusa marine reserve at wwfmediterraneo.it) is the most specifically remarkable wildlife experience available on any Italian island, and the one that the Lampedusa visit in June-September most specifically offers.

Q&A: Lampedusa

When is the best time to visit Lampedusa?

May-June: the pre-peak-season sweet spot, the Spiaggia dei Conigli accessible and uncrowded, the sea temperature already warm (23-25°C), the turtle nesting beginning, and the accommodation prices substantially below the July-August peak. September: the post-peak sweet spot, the sea still warm (27°C), the crowds reduced after August 15, the turtle hatchling emergence (the most dramatically moving turtle experience), and the accommodation prices returning to reasonable levels. July-August: the peak season, maximum prices, maximum crowds at Conigli, maximum heat (38-40°C), but maximum sea conditions and the specific Lampedusa summer energy that the island produces at full capacity.
