Naples and the Amalfi Coast are the perfect five-day southern pairing: the wild, soulful city and the cliffside coast, just a short hop apart. Two days for Naples and Pompeii, then three to unwind on the coast, moving between towns by ferry rather than the jammed coast road. Do the city first, fueled by the best pizza on earth, then let the sea slow you down. Pick a coastal base and hop the towns by boat. Don't try to drive it all.

No car. The Circumvesuviana reaches Pompeii, and ferries serve the coast (a car is a liability there). Book a Pompeii guide and a coastal base in Sorrento, Positano, or Amalfi, and stay street-smart in Naples.

5-Day Naples and Amalfi Itinerary

Day 1: Naples

The chaotic historic center, Spaccanapoli, the underground city, and a true Neapolitan pizza in the city that invented it. Loud, vivid, alive.

Day 2: Pompeii

The Circumvesuviana to Pompeii for the morning, ideally with a guide, and the Naples Archaeological Museum for the treasures dug from it. Add Vesuvius if you have the legs.

Days 3-5: The Amalfi Coast

To a coastal base, then one town a day by ferry: Positano, Amalfi with Ravello above, and Capri, with lemon terraces, swims, and long seafood lunches. The cliffside reward.

Q&A: Naples and the Amalfi Coast in 5 Days

Is 5 days enough for Naples and the Amalfi Coast?

Yes: two days for Naples and Pompeii and three on the coast, all close together in the south. Doing the city first and the coast as the finale leaves you relaxed at the end.

How do I get around?

The Circumvesuviana train reaches Pompeii from Naples, and ferries link the coastal towns and Capri. Skip the car. The coast road is slow, winding, and parking-free.

Where should I base on the coast?

Sorrento for the best transport links, or Positano or Amalfi to be on the coast itself. From any of them, ferries reach the other towns and Capri easily.

Is Naples safe?

The center is fine with normal city sense: keep your bag and phone secure in crowds and near the station. Naples is intense but welcoming, and millions enjoy it.

When should I go?

Late spring and September for warm seas, reliable ferries, and bearable Pompeii heat. Summer is hot and busy. The coast quiets and many boats stop from November to March.
