Neive is a medieval village of 3,400 inhabitants in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, 5km from Alba, in the heart of the Barbaresco wine zone. It is listed among Italy's most beautiful villages (I Borghi più belli d'Italia) and deserves the designation more than most, the medieval center on the hilltop, the cobblestone streets, the wine producers' cellars visible in the limestone below the town, and the view over the Tanaro valley and the distant Alps are exactly what the Langhe is supposed to look like. Unlike the more famous Barolo zone villages, Neive has remained proportionate, recognizably a living place rather than a wine tourism installation.

Barbaresco and the Wines of Neive
The Neive commune produces Barbaresco DOCG, one of the two great Nebbiolo-based wines of Piedmont (the other being Barolo, produced around the town of the same name 25km west). Barbaresco is sometimes called "the feminine Barolo", a description that is both reductive and slightly accurate: the wines tend to be more elegant and approachable younger than Barolo, with the same fundamental Nebbiolo character (rose, tar, cherry, truffle) but in a structure that opens earlier. The specific crus (individual vineyard sites) within the Neive commune. Serraboella, Gallina, Albesani, Basarin, are considered among the finest in Barbaresco. The medieval center of Neive takes about an hour to walk thoroughly: the main piazza (Piazza del Cocco), the Torre dell'Orologio (clock tower, 16th century), the 18th-century Palazzo Borgese, and the network of lanes that descend from the piazza. Several wine producers have tasting rooms in the historic center or directly accessible from it, calling ahead (most speak Italian and some English) arranges tastings of Barbaresco and Moscato in the cellars where the wines are made. By car from Alba: 5km, 10 minutes. From Turin: 70km, 1h. From Milan: 150km, 1h45. Neive has a railway station on the Asti-Alba line, trains from Turin or Asti. The station is in the valley below the hill town. The village center is 2km uphill by road or the steep sentiero pedonale.
What is the difference between Barbaresco and Barolo?
Both are made from Nebbiolo grapes in adjacent Piedmontese zones. Barolo (Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Barolo) requires longer ageing (minimum 38 months, 62 for Riserva) and tends to be more structured and age-worthy. Barbaresco (Neive, Barbaresco, Treiso) requires shorter ageing (minimum 26 months, 50 for Riserva) and tends to be more approachable younger. Both can be extraordinary. When is the best time to visit Neive?
Autumn is the quintessential Langhe season, the vineyards turn gold and red, the truffle season is active (October-November for white truffle, the greatest of all), the air is clear, and the valley views are at their finest. The Fiera del Tartufo Bianco di Alba (October-November) is the regional event that draws the most visitors - Neive during this period is busy but not overwhelmed. Spring for the wildflowers in the valleys and the first green of the vines. Summer for easier travel logistics but without the autumn's specific quality.
