Palombara Sabina (a town of approximately 14,000 inhabitants in the Sabina hills, Metropolitan City of Rome. 35km northeast of Rome on Via Nomentana extension toward Rieti, at 412m altitude on the first Sabina ridge above the Tiber valley) has a castle legend that is among the most specific and most verifiable in the Lazio tradition: the Castello Savelli (the medieval fortress of the Savelli family, the Roman aristocratic dynasty that held the papal office with Honorius III and Honorius IV, on the hill above the Palombara Sabina historic center) has a door in its dungeon that is known as the "Door of the Alchemist" (la Porta dell'Alchimista) and is engraved with alchemical symbols, the reason being, according to the tradition documented since the 18th century, that in 1300 an anonymous alchemist was given hospitality in the castle by the Savelli to pursue his gold-making experiments, locked himself in the dungeon for the final phase of his work, and was never seen again. The next morning, the alchemist had vanished, leaving behind only scattered sheets of papyrus covered in alchemical formulas (which the castle servants cleaned up without understanding) and the engraved door.

The Door of the Alchemist is real, the engraved door in the Savelli castle dungeon is documented and has been the subject of scholarly study that has interpreted the alchemical symbols as consistent with the 14th-century Hermetic tradition. Whether the story is historically accurate in its particulars is a different question. That the door exists and that it has been fascinating students of the occult tradition since the 18th century is beyond dispute.

The Castello Savelli

The Castello Savelli of Palombara Sabina (the medieval fortress, partially restored, on the hill above the historic center, accessible for exterior visit at all times. Interior visits organized by the municipality on specific days and for groups by appointment) is the primary Palombara Sabina monument: the tower, the walls, the specific engraved door in the dungeon, and the panoramic position over the Tiber valley and the Sabina hills. The alchemical door visit requires interior access, contact the Palombara Sabina municipal office (comune.palombarasabina.rm.it) for current access arrangements.

Sabina DOP Olive Oil

Palombara Sabina is in the Sabina DOP olive oil zone (the oldest Italian olive oil DOP, covering the Sabina hills from the Tiber north of Rome to the Rieti basin). The Palombara Sabina producers (the Carboncella, Leccino, and Raja varieties on the first Sabina ridge) produce an oil with the specific character of the lower Sabina zone: slightly less intense than the upper Sabina (Rieti area) equivalent, with a lighter fruitiness and a refined finish. Buy at the local cooperative frantoio or from the specific producers who sell at the November harvest market in the Piazza di Colonna square.

Q&A: Palombara Sabina

Can I see the alchemist's door at the Castello Savelli?

The alchemical door is in the castle dungeon, accessible only with interior castle access. Contact the comune for the current guided visit program. The municipal cultural association periodically organizes castle visits that include the dungeon and the door. The exterior of the castle (the tower, the walls) is freely visible from the approach road and provides the panoramic context. The Palombara Sabina visit is best combined with the Sabina olive oil circuit (the Toffia, Fara in Sabina, and Palombara Sabina producers accessible in a single morning drive) in November during the harvest season.
