Sermoneta is a medieval hill town of 3,500 inhabitants in the province of Latina in Lazio, 70km southeast of Rome and 15km from the Tyrrhenian coast. It sits on a limestone hill above the Agro Pontino, the reclaimed Pontine Marshes that Mussolini drained in the 1930s to create the agricultural towns of Latina and Sabaudia. The Castello Caetani
The Castello Caetani di Sermoneta was built by the Caetani family (one of the most powerful Roman aristocratic dynasties, who produced Pope Boniface VIII in 1294) beginning in the 13th century and expanded and reinforced through the 15th. Cesare Borgia occupied it in 1499 after the Caetani were eliminated from control. The castle was returned to the Caetani after Alexander VI's death and remained in the family until it was donated to the Caetani Foundation in 1977. The guided tour (ticket €6, mandatory, independent visit not possible) covers: the Torre Maschio (the main tower, with views over the plain), the prison, the kitchens, the residential apartments with period furnishings, and the Chapel of the Annunciation. The furnishings are original Caetani property, not recreations. The castle is one of the most completely furnished medieval fortresses accessible to the public in central Italy.
The Town of Sermoneta
The historic center of Sermoneta climbs from the lower gate to the castle at the summit through lanes of medieval stone houses. The Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, 13th-15th century) has a Romanesque-Gothic exterior and an interior with 15th-century frescoes of the Zuccari school. The small civic loggia (Loggia dei Mercanti) and the well in the main piazza complete the medieval ensemble. The town is compact, the complete circuit takes 90 minutes.
