Sorrento is more base than headline sight, and that is exactly why four days here works so well: it is the best-connected town on the bay, with the train and the ferries on its doorstep. Use it to reach Pompeii, Capri, and one Amalfi Coast day, with the town's cafes and sunsets to come home to. The rule that keeps it relaxed: one outing a day, by train or ferry, never the jammed coast road by car.

No car needed or wanted. Sorrento sits on the Circumvesuviana line and the ferry routes. Book Pompeii or a guide and the Capri ferry ahead in season, and wear good shoes for the ruins.

4-Day Sorrento Itinerary

Day 1: Sorrento Itself

Ease in with the town: the lanes and the main square, the clifftop terraces over the bay, limoncello and a long seafood lunch. A relaxed first day, sunset over the water.

Day 2: Pompeii

The Circumvesuviana to Pompeii for the morning, ideally with a guide so the buried city comes alive, with water and sturdy shoes. Add Vesuvius if you like. Back to Sorrento for the evening.

Day 3: Capri by Ferry

A ferry from Sorrento to the island of Capri: the town and piazzetta (small square), the views, a boat around the sea stacks. One island, relaxed, home for dinner.

Day 4: One Amalfi Coast Day

A ferry to Positano or Amalfi (with Ravello above) for a single coast day, by boat not the road. One town, a long lunch, back to Sorrento. Not the whole coast.

Q&A: Sorrento in 4 Days

Is Sorrento a good base?

One of the best on the bay. The town is pleasant rather than sight-heavy, but its train and ferry links make Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast all easy day trips. Four days here is comfortable and well connected.

How do I reach Pompeii and Capri?

Pompeii by the Circumvesuviana train in about half an hour. Capri by ferry from Sorrento's Marina Piccola. Book entries and boats ahead in season and go early to beat crowds.

Can I see the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento?

Yes, one town at a time by ferry, Positano or Amalfi, rather than the congested coast road. Keep it to a single coast day within the four and it stays relaxed.

Do I need a car?

No. The train and ferries cover everything, and the coast road is slow and stressful with nowhere to park. A car is a liability here.

When should I go?

Spring and fall for comfortable Pompeii weather and calm seas to the islands. Summer is hot and busy. The shoulder seasons are quieter with most things still open.
